583 PointsNetworking Thursday - March 18th – Connect with other Treehouse Students!
Hey Treehouse Students!
Welcome back to another Networking Thursday 🥳
💬 How to participate:
- Answer the icebreaker activity: Mac, Windows, or other? 😏
- Introduce yourself
- Share your LinkedIn profile URL for other students to connect to
- Share links and/or screenshots of the projects you've been working on
- Share your interests, hobbies, etc
- Chat with other students here by responding to their posts
Make those connections, support each other, leave some endorsements/recommendations on other student's LinkedIn profiles, lend a helping hand to others in search of work, and give some positive feedback on fellow student's projects. We're all on this learning journey together.
Hello everybody! My name is Bo, and I'm the Director of Marketing and Production here at Treehouse. Here's my LinkedIn profile and Twitter. I'd love to connect with you!
I've loved the Mac OS since using the old G3 days to play Oregon Trail. I have a ton of appreciation for the Windows OS, but Mac OSX beats it in approachability, intuitiveness, and speed every time for me.
Recently I've been working on marketing campaigns for Techdegree that we want to launch in 2021, and a bunch of other fun features and projects for Treehouse. Keep your eye out - and I'd love to hear your feedback on anything you're seeing.
Personally, I'm working on getting better at fixing my car, rather than relying on a mechanic. I'm gearing up to replace my fuel pump tonight - fingers crossed I figure it out.
Great to meet you all, and if you ever have any 1:1 feedback on Treehouse or our marketing you'd like to offer, don't be a stranger -- I'd love to hear from you: bo.jacober [at] teamtreehouse.com.
Hope y'all are having a great week!
Bo Jacober
583 PointsYour introduction was great Katrice Marshall - welcome! So glad to have you here, and excited for all that's to come in your learning journey. Don't be a stranger!

6,991 PointsHello coders, I'm new to this community and would just like to say that I'm thankful for being recommended to try Treehouse this place is full of awesome people. I'm currently working on the Front-End Dev course. It's not the techdegree but its challenging for me as a older younger guy working to make a career change. I've had & also used Twitter so I'm familiar with it. Bug I've never had an official Linkedin profile although I did sign up, just never finished. So my goal is to do the #100days challenge & learn Front-End dev this year create my Linkedin profile and land a role at a new startup or company. Be Safe #Blessed

320 PointsHello everyone, I'm brand new and just struggling to keep my head above water, and stay motivated to keep learning. Currently dreaming of a career change. Any tips are welcome!
edit: Forgot to answer some questions Always used Windows, don't think it's worth the hassle for linux Hobbies include record + mp3 collecting, MTG, video games, trying new IPAs, and pre-covid times- going to concerts

583 PointsHey David Ryan - welcome! I've always loved our How to Learn series if you're looking to stay motivated. This might sound corny, but Dave McFarland's "Learn Like an Expert" video is inspiring to me when I feel like I've hit a wall, or that I'm not making progress. Don't be afraid or discouraged by the fact it's hard to stay motivated. We've all been there. And we're here for you!
Aaron Jorgensen
Python Development Techdegree Graduate 13,658 PointsWelcome David Ryan, you have made an excellent choice coming to TreeHouse. In terms of tips, I'd say remember that everyone is learning and google is OK. Also, network network network!!!! I found it helpful to find some key people to have as coding mentors and life mentors.
janet178
4,220 PointsHey David! Thanks for your honesty. It helped me to hear about the "How to Learn" series.
For me, learning is all about discipline. I regularly put in 2 hours a day. I think just showing up is huge. Some days will be more productive than others. I also like sharing with friends who work in the tech field. I've made friends who are developers and that has been critical to helping me stay motivated. They also give me support when I get stuck. Twitter is great for staying motivated. The 100 Days of Code Challenge is a good way to connect with other people learning how to code.
I'm always up for a convo on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/meghan-gill/
and I also just started a blog to share some of what I'm learning about Android dev. My first post is on structs. Check it out: https://www.meghangillwrites.com/blog
As per the question, I use a Mac. I shifted from a PC to a Mac this past August and I've grown to love it :)

6,426 PointsHello David! Good to meet you....I am struggling to keep my head above water as well. By the way did we make it into the class? I completed the track, however I am uncertain as to whether I was allowed into the program.
Mark Hollrah
3,387 PointsWhy hello everybody. My name is Mark. I am in a similar boat as you David. But it is getting and does get better. Unfortunately I am also in a big career change as well. The only thing that helps is by leaning on family and friends. For anyone who wants to know a little more about me I have a linkedin page. https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-hollrah/

Python Development Techdegree Graduate 13,658 PointsHey Bo, nice to meet you and thanks for kicking this off. Hello All, My name is Aaron and I'm an alumni checking back in. I sure do miss this community! lol. I'm the Sr. Service Reliability Manager for SkipTheDishes and oversee all of the Canadian platform for service reliability. This is my Linkedin. I'd love to connect with you guys.
I've been a Mac/Linux guy for about 16 years now and the thought of going to windows is not even fathomable! lol.
I've been writing an application in my free time that is a Machine Learning signal processing platform (Audio/video compression). I've been learning quite a bit and it definitely keeps me challenged.
All of you currently enrolled and working through a Techdegree keep plugging away. You will look back and be grateful for this time. I for one consider it one of my greatest decisions when it comes to programming.
I'd love to chat with anyone who is interested so feel free to reach out here or via Linkedin. Hope everyone has a fantastic day!

I had a Mac a long time ago but I'm planning on buy a Mac eventually because it seems that most web devs use Mac lol I like my brand new HP laptop but sounds like Mac is better..what do you think? Why do you prefer Mac/Linux? I'm planning on taking the Python TechDegree so listening to your story is inspiring me more lol
I'm so glad that they do this Network events because I love meeting like-minded people and learn from each other! You all inspire me so much!! Thanks for being here! I hope you are doing well and looking forward to connecting with you and other fellow students! Happy coding and have a great day! :)

Zowie Erickson
Front End Web Development Techdegree Graduate 16,203 PointsHey, everyone! My name is Zowie, and I'm currently a Front End Web Development Techdegree student. I'm looking forward to beginning the JavaScript Techdegree soon after!
I prefer Mac over Windows 100%. I've always used Macs when I was younger and even used Windows for a couple of years before I switched back to Mac because of its OS and ecosystem.
Here is my LinkedIn and my Twitter!
Right now, I'm focusing on the 100 days of coding challenge that I'm posting everyday on my Twitter and LinkedIn. But in my free time, I like to go to the gym and play games, like World of Warcraft. I also work early in the morning as an online English teacher to students in China. Since my work is online, I traveled Asia teaching English for two years, working mostly in Vietnam (I'm half Vietnamese!). Now, I'm eager to begin a career switch to software development!

VICTORIA DENNIS
Full Stack JavaScript Techdegree Student 3,679 PointsHey all, Victoria here! I'm just jumping into the JS Full stack degree - pretty fun stuff. I'm going to make some pretty web pages and some simple video games. I'm in Unit 1 and if you want to have some coding sessions, I'm up for a discord group. Also if anyone plays League or Minecraft, I play those, too. I like the guy who uses JS to make video games; that's pretty cool. But that's not on my LinkedIn and/or Twitter.
Joe Tallman
Python Development Techdegree Student 566 PointsHey Victoria!
I actually messaged you on your Treehouse YouTube video the other day. I ended up enrolling in the Python Development Techdegree and I just added you on Twitter. If you see @jm_tallman, that’s me! 🙂
janet178
4,220 PointsHey Victoria! I tried the LinkedIn link but it didn't work for me. You now have a new Twitter follower ;) It's great that you dove into the JS Full stack degree! I'm glad you're enjoying it. I'm doing Android development.

16,187 PointsHi everybody! My name is Alejandra and I'm new to tech! I've been learning to code for a few months and I'm building my portfolio.
I've always been fascinated with science and technology and web development has been super fun! I'm a total nerd, I love reading and learning. I've always enjoyed studying for hours. Sometimes I play video games, some of my favorite are Pokémon, Super Mario, Kirby, Zelda and more lol. I love killing zombies! lol :D lol I would love to connect with people who are in the same journey like me. I haven't updated my LinkedIn in ages but here it is lol: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alejandra-valdivia-93660861/

7,243 PointsHey to all!
I'm Tom and I'm currently considering a switch in career from a photographer to a front end web developer! It's still early days for me (around 1.5 months of learning) but I'm really enjoying getting my teeth into JavaScript at the moment.
I currently use a windows desktop along side an apple macbook, best of both worlds I say!
Here's my LinkedIn Profile
I'm currently trying to build two portfolio sites, one for my future web dev projects and one for my photography. I've also built an expense tracker, a to-do list, an image gallery with a light box feature and a very buggy calculator that I'm trying to fix ><
Pleasure to meet you all!
Ariana Maksimović
2,797 PointsHello to everyone,
FINALLY I caught an event because I always miss it :D btw I am Ariana, recently graduated IT engineer. I know treehouse for about 2 or 3 years but as a participant I am here for a few months, I just love their courses really, I always recommend to everyone for beginners in IT.
In free time I like to read books (bookaholic), listening to music, walks in nature, watch sometimes series or movies....AAAAANNNNDDD upgrading knowledge here on treehouse. I am still searching what I would like to do (everyone is looking for himself until he doesn't find something what he would really like to do), and I have realised that my biggest passion is UI/UX design, also I have been under mentoring and I really really love it. Besides that I am also learning databases here and I would like to try to learn c#, Java, QA Engineering and Machine learning.
Welll....that's all about me :) I am always open to meet new people and different cultures so go ahead
Have a nice evening / day
ethan wolfe
5,717 Pointspft obviously windows 😏
my name is Ethan and im from Texas. i used to do maintenance and installation for warehouses, but i got into an accident crushing off three fingers, so now i'm doing security while i learn to code. i spend all day and night learning HTML/CSS/JavaScript with that vision of a better future!
my LinkedIn is www.linkedin.com/in/ethan-a-wolfe but its pretty bare at the moment. my hobbies include CSS battles, MTG, turn based RPGs and spending time with my kids. Right now almost all my time goes towards learning and developing my (hopefully) future career.
Mark Sauder
Front End Web Development Techdegree Student 10,894 PointsHey everyone!!
I've been meaning to get around to this networking night for a long time, as I view coding like going to the gym it's ok on your own but its much more inspiring to have a buddy lol.
Anyways I live in Ontario Canada. I have been coding steady for about 2 1/2 months after my day job concrete forming, I'm currently constructing a 5 story apartment building. I have realised that eventually my body will not be able to do hard labour, so this is my future hopefully :).
I have never used a mac before.. and I am just getting into the end of unit 5 of the fewd course, JavaScript is a whole new animal and is much harder to wrap my head around.
I don't know anyone who is even interested in coding, so I am really just looking to make some friends to chat with or work on projects with. To make this journey a little more exciting lol. It doesn't matter if we are at the same level of coding or not just to talk to someone who knows what I'm talking about would be a blessing haha.
Happy coding!

Front End Web Development Techdegree Student 2,240 PointsGreetings Mark! You are so right, I view coding like working out as well. I need to do a little of it every day to keep growing and gain consistency. It’s also better with a buddy too! That is one of the nice parts about joining Treehouse. I feel like there is a sense of community here. Even like Aaron posted earlier, he has finished the courses and still enjoys coming back to stay connected. I don’t know anyone who is interested in coding either so I’m glad we are here learning on this journey! If only I could keep up with working out more consistently!! Keep at it and reach out anytime! 👍🏽

Front End Web Development Techdegree Student 10,894 PointsHey Erika! I couldn't agree with you more, same too you. :)
Sarah Amechazurra
853 PointsI just recently downloaded and installed VS code into my chromebook. Therefore I prefer Linux.
I'm Sarah. I'm an academic at heart. A habitual student learning and improving my metacognition. Also, I am interested in improving my understanding of computer science. Data structures and algorithms across multiple programming languages enthralls me.
https://www.linkedin.com/in/sametxa/
I am currently working on my first project which is building a portfolio website of all current and future projects. See my linkedin profile for more information. I'm so thrilled to start sharing more of myself and documenting my journey with all of you.
For the longest time I've had the wrong perceptions on math. I had a math phobia. In the past I dislike math only because I had poor self image in my own abilities to master mathematics and I didn't have the motivation or support from my peers to enable me to be confident in mastering it.
Now my perception has changed. I like that doing math problems creates new neural pathways and expands cognitive capabilities in the brain.
I love the learning process and find joy in the challenge of it.
Unsubscribed User
Front End Web Development Techdegree Student 2,240 PointsGreetings Sarah! I love what you said about changing your perception on math. I, like many others, do not like math. I became a librarian mostly because there is no math at all! But I’m here to make a career change along with some old perceptions as well. Support and confidence are key. Thanks for sharing!

Front End Web Development Techdegree Student 2,240 PointsGreetings! 👋🏾 I’m joining you all from sunny Florida this evening. For as long as I can remember I have loved Apple products but could not afford a Mac or MacBook. I’m a librarian. Librarians are not rich in $$, just rich in knowledge, information, and patience. So I have been a Windows user...until this week! I ordered my first MacBook! It is still in the box. I need a mouse and a “get started” virtual training with an Apple specialist (scheduling that next week). Like many of you, I’m on the career change path. I’ve been in the FEWD techdegree program for a month now. I’m coding along on my iPad since my super old Sony Vaio laptop hasn’t been able to do what I need it to do for this course. So all that to say, I am a Mac person. My hobbies include reading manga (currently reading “The Way of the Househusband”), taking care of my 16 year old Min Pin, Jubilee (more like being bossed around by the dog), helping out at my church, running, yoga, building LEGO sets, all things Disney, and playing Animal Crossing New Horizons. I am working my way through Unit 2, learning all about CSS and preparing for project 2 which I will get to do on my new laptop! So excited about that. I’m also on day 30 of the 100 Days of Code challenge. I like helping people and making technology and information accessible so I hope to use what I learn in this program to help others in my next career/position. www.linkedin.com/in/erika2davis It’s been nice reading all of your posts this evening. It’s encouraging and I’m glad to be on this journey with you all. Stay safe and keep making progress everyday!
Mark Hollrah
3,387 PointsI've always been a Windows person with versions like 3.1 and 95 to Windows 10. The only Apple computer that I had used 5 and 1/2 inch floppy disks. That was an Apple IIe and you had to write program to print off a banner. But that was 30 years ago.
Bo Jacober
583 PointsWelcome Erika Davis ! Love that Jubilee made it into your Treehouse profile picture 💖Best of luck on your learning journey!

Joe Tallman
Python Development Techdegree Student 566 PointsHey all -
This is actually the first day of my coding journey! So...hey! No LinkedIn yet, but I did just start a Twitter account to document my journey over @jm_tallman - so feel free to hit me up over there.
I’m 35 and work full time as a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal service. Really enjoy my job, but my passion has always been technology. And I finally decided to stop putting off my dream to learn to program, build things and see where that takes me. I’m starting with the Python Techdegree and as far as Day 1’s go, I couldn’t be enjoying myself anymore.
Before I forget the Icebreaker, I primarily am a Windows guy. But I know my way around a Linux environment and I’m writing this on my Apple iPad, so really. I love it all. No bad blood here.
Anyway, good to meet everyone here. It was really cool reading everyone’s posts!
Jason Williamson
6,426 PointsHey Joe,
I am using a mac as well. I currently have an outdated LinkedIn account as well... not worth mentioning. However I have just completed the JavaScript class and I am currently working on HTML. Feel free to reach out if I can be of assistance.
Keegan Gideon
2,702 PointsHello everyone!
I am currently using windows but will eventually switch to mac, ( all my devices are apple except my laptop). I am currently on the front end development track. It's been really good so far and cant wait to start java script. I currently work at a treatment center for kids with severe behaviors here in Texas. A friend mentioned coding to me about 8yrs ago but never got into it. So I'm finally here giving it a shot and so far I love it. Its really fascinating to see behind the scenes of how everything works. Apart from learning code, I love soccer, favorite teams are Real Madrid and Arsenal. Also I love gaming but haven't got the chance to really play since I'm spending a good chunk of my spare time learning to code.
