We're back with another Networking Thursday ā giving you the opportunity to connect with other Treehouse Students!

I'll kick things off! š¬
I'm Ryan Mouser, the Content & Community Marketing Specialist here at Treehouse. I was 15 years old when I started learning to code in PHP for a popular text-based MMORPG game. I've been with Treehouse for over 2 years now and have had the amazing opportunity to wear many different hats. I've been learning with Treehouse since 2015 (you can check out my previous profile here).
Currently, I'm working alongside our world-class team on some exciting opportunities to bring the Treehouse Community closer together. Stay tuned! š
Outside of Treehouse, I have the joy of living life with my incredible wife, our 3 awesome kids, and our 2 cat furbabies. We love to make music, garden, cook, play games, and watch fun TV (any Avatar: The Last Airbender fans out there?)
Whenever I'm learning, I find that having a project plan and a daily checklist (using a project management tool like Asana) helps me to make progress every day ā even if it's just a small step. My family also provides helpful support in those times to keep me accountable. How do you stay accountable? Who or what in your life helps you stay on track?

6,246 PointsHi, friends at Treehouse! I try to use the Github contribution chart as a way to stay accountable. Being able to see the green dot appear after pushing up some codes for a project or just for practice following a tutorial really helps me.
My name is Wilson and I am based out of NYC. I am currently half-way done with the Web Development fellowship at Flatiron School x Tech Talent Pipeline. 9 weeks down, and about 10 more weeks to go. I learned Ruby, Ruby on Rails, and we are now moving on to vanilla JS for the next three weeks.
Outside of learning how to code and becoming a better programmer - I enjoy doing yoga first thing in the morning, and also getting a good work out through functional training. I feel really energized after a good workout and it helps me stay focused throughout the day. My guilty pleasures are sipping on tequila and binging on Netflix content when I feel like doing absolutely nothing.

Apparently some (a lot) of the potential employers will look at your guithub and see if you are consistently making changes and commits. Just wanted to give you some kudos and encouragement. That's great that you are using Git regularly!
If you haven't already check out "gh-pages"
You can host your projects for free and visit them by URL assuming you have the correct setup e.g. html file, css, js etc.
For example I have a github account called drumdev and check out the url...
Thats the main one and LOOK... you can also have more than one e.g.

But yeah... maybe you already know this!

Right now I'm at the React Basics course. I never think that development was for me, but I'm getting good at this. That's so awesome that you are seeking to learn something that will better yourself and at the same time contribute to the benefit of the world. I am going to check out 100 days of coding challenge. I am currently on day 15 of the JavaScript30 challenge with Wes Bos. Anything that gives us accountability is a good thing. We need each other and others need us. Keep it up. If you are new to coding and you are already doing React... don't worry if it gets hard!
You have jumped right into the deep end and that's great.
One tip I can give is "Keep EVERY thing you work on as future portfolio pieces" If it's not worthy of a portfolio just yet... you may come back to it in a few months time with new and improved knowledge and ask yourself "How can I make this better and make it original and worthy of my portfolio?"

I always fall back to my portfolio and experiences to justify career progression as I climb the Web Dev career ladder. Our portfolios and experiences are personal and unique to all of us and are what set us apart for excelling in various roles. I am accountable to continually work on mine, just like others are theirs.
First I was a Highschool student aspiring to university... Then I was a graduate... Then I was a Junior Front End Web Developer... Now I am a Front End Web Developer (with UI/UX).
I have a goal to become a Senior Front End Web Developer/Junior Back end/Back end/Full stack and ultimately senior web developer (You know those roles we all see based in London with 100k salaries!!! :) Something like that...)
TeamTreehouse is the medium that has helped me get this far and continues to carry me further! I was actually recommended to TeamTreehouse by a friend who had a TeamTreehouse article on him! (Laurie Gray)
I like to keep fit and study... but this clashes with a desire of liking to socialise with alcohol - which kills energy and motivation afterwards! Finding the balance is key and I'm still trying to master it at 26 :)

You have a great story there. I'm 35 and just now figured out the path I want to travel, so you're well ahead of the game in a lot of regards. Keep your eye on the goal. You sound like the kind of person that accomplishes exactly what they set out to do.

Front End Web Development Techdegree Graduate 18,156 PointsHi all! I stay motivated by an innate desire to learn...everything. My wife is also a big motivation and accountability factor. We've set a plan for our life and my career is going to factor heavily into that.
I'm currently working on the Connect 4 game in the OOJ Javascript course. It's kicking my butt, but it's a lot of fun. I keep reminding myself that the hard stuff now will fuel my skills in the future.
When I'm not coding, I'm enjoying good food and drinks with my wife. Walking and playing with our dog. Or playing video or board games. Currently working on Darkest Dungeon...having even a bit of coding knowledge gives me a great appreciation for the work that people put into these games.

And yes to your question on mezcal, mezcal is tons of fun but I don't think I ever drink it straight. Always had to mix it into a cocktail most of the time. Tequila I enjoy it by itself! Does the game still exist? It would be interesting to check it out from a programmers perspective :)
RE: Bringing the Treehouse Community closer together... How about Community Challenges? e.g. "We challenge the community to make a website/an app/a piece of code that does the following/meets these requirements." Maybe this exists? IDK. The community can then post their links to their hosted submission. (DONT GIVE US ANSWERS, only feedback) Maybe there can then be a recognition video by TeamTreehouse glancing over the projects (with dev name overlay), being proud of the results of the community... We could have the recognition video link in our CV's which show activity in our extracurricular time. We have a portfolio piece and recognition! You's have helped us achieve this and have great marketing material. I would definitely include every instance of one of these projects and videos on my CV/portfolio and that's direct Treehouse marketing! Imagine all the positivity all round assuming the submissions are great! Risks are people could have a bitter taste if their submission was not worthy of an include... so maybe to mitigate this risk there could be a vote and the top 5/top 10 get highlighted... with a credits at the end with ALL names. Just an idea :) Feel free to take inspiration from it in any form!
