1,744 PointsNeed help in the challenge task 2
I spent hours in this single exercise and cant pass...the challenge is required to set private field inside the User. Plz see my code below:
My first version: public class User{ private User(String fIrstName, String lastName){ this.userName = firstName + lastName; } public String getUser{ return this.userName; } } (no errors but asks to use mfIrstName)
My second version: (many errors)
public class User {
public String userName = mFirstName + mLastName;
public User(String firstName, String lastName) {
// TODO: Set the private fields here
private String mFirstName;
private String mLastName;
}
public String getuserName(){
return userName;
}
}
public class ForumPost {
private User mAuthor;
private String mTitle;
private String mDescription;
public User getAuthor() {
return mAuthor;
}
public String getTitle() {
return mTitle;
}
// TODO: We need to expose the description
}
public class User {
public String userName = mFirstName + mLastName;
public User(String firstName, String lastName) {
// TODO: Set the private fields here
private String mFirstName(){
return firstName;
}
private String mLastName(){
return lastName;
}
}
public String getuserName(){
return this.userName;
}
}
public class Forum {
private String mTopic;
public Forum (String topic){
mTopic = topic;
}
public String getTopic() {
return mTopic;
}
public void addPost(ForumPost post) {
/* When all is ready uncomment this...
System.out.printf("New post from %s %s about %s.\n",
post.getAuthor().getFirstName(),
post.getAuthor().getLastName(),
post.getTitle());
*/
}
}
public class Example {
public static void main(String[] args) {
System.out.println("Starting forum example...");
if (args.length < 2) {
System.out.println("first and last name are required. eg: java Example Craig Dennis");
}
// Forum forum = new Forum("Java");
// Take the first two elements passed args
// User author = new User();
// Add the author, title and description
// ForumPost post = new ForumPost();
// forum.addPost(post);
}
}

Courses Plus Student 7,254 PointsYou're nearly there!
In your getFirstName() and getLastName() methods, you want to return your member variables.
In your constructor, you added the value of "firstName" to the member variable "mFirstName". Now you want to return that value, see my original answer for how to do that for getFirstName();

Courses Plus Student 7,254 PointsHello,
It looks like you need to declare member variables for the first and last name of your User class. Then in the constructor, assign the values.
public class User {
public String userName;
private mFirstName;
public User(String firstName, String lastName) {
// TODO: Set the private fields here
mFirstName = firstName;
}
public String getFirstName(){
return mFirstName;
}
private String mLastName(){
return lastName;
}
public String getuserName(){
return this.userName;
}
}
I've shown you how to do the first name, perhaps you could use that to continue? I'll check back.

1,744 PointsJon, thank you for your help. I changed my code and now I only get 2 errors.
my code: public class User { private String mFirstName; private String mLastName;
public User(String firstName, String lastName) { // TODO: Set the private fields here mFirstName = firstName; mLastName = lastName; } public String getFirstName(){ return FirstName; } public String getLastName(){ return LastName; } }
errors: ./User.java:11: error: cannot find symbol return FirstName; ^ symbol: variable FirstName location: class User ./User.java:14: error: cannot find symbol return LastName; ^ symbol: variable LastName location: class User 2 errors
