<nav> element is directly after the link in the header

i tried placing the <nav> element but every time the answer is being shown incorrect. why?

Hi there! Remember the "link in the header" is everything inside the <a></a> tags. So your nav is not after the link... it's before :smiley: Take a look:

    <header>
      <a href="index.html">  <!-- beginning of link -->
        <h1>Nick Pettit</h1>
        <h2>Designer</h2>
      </a>                             <!-- end of link -->
      <nav>
        <ul></ul>
      </nav>
    </header>
