Merchandise blocks don't stack when I send to my phone

I've been working on a responsive html email template and am having trouble with it so I thought I'd revisit this tutorial. I'm having the same problem with this with columns not stacking on mobile.

When I copy and paste the html for this tutorial into an email client—in this case I tried Pardot and Mail Chimp—the merchandise blocks don't stack, they just get narrower. I'm viewing on an iPhone. Do you know what might be causing this?

Was a solution found? The course has been left up for 3-4 years with this problem? The start to the course seemed really promising, what a shame.
