Hi all!
Forgive me if this is an inane question, but how does one go about finding a mentor in this business? Is it always a paid relationship (such as with coaching), or are there individuals who do it as an altruistic endeavor?
I'm not really even sure where to start. I feel this area is really lacking for me. Technically, I get the theory, and I'm able to apply it. What I'm really looking for is more encouragement and guidance. Sometimes, having a professional say, "Nice job!" or "Consider this ..." makes all the difference in the world.
I'm grateful for any advice and/or direction anyone can offer.

20,822 PointsSee if there are any user groups or Meetups in your area that you can attend. This web page has some in the LA area: http://webdesign.meetup.com/cities/us/ca/los_angeles/
You can then chat with other web developers and possible meet someone who can mentor you.
