Magical Method __str__ giving me some problems

I'm having trouble with my code, please assist:

    def __init__(self, pattern=None):
        self.pattern = pattern

    def __str__(self):
        calling
        for item in self.pattern:
            if '.' in self.pattern:
                return 'dot'
            elif '_' in self.pattern:
                return 'dash'

        return '-'.join(self.pattern)


class S(Letter):
    pass
