Treehouse Moderator 145,860 PointsI personally don't do much design, and I don't know of any other vector-based program comparable to Illustrator, but as for Photoshop, I have heard quite a few good things about GIMP. It's open-source (so it's free), and seems to function quite well when compared to Photoshop. I'd compare it to Open Office (Which I use) compared to MS Word. (I actually prefer Open Office)

Courses Plus Student 11,859 PointsThe consensus seems to be there is no equivalent replacement for Photoshop for high end professional work (yet). Depending on what you need to do, there are several options for next best. Examples are Photoshop Elements ($100) or The Gimp (open source and free). For Illustrator, an open source tool called Inkscape is considered very close in capability now.
