layer mask gradient

The layer mask gradient option is just not working for me, i have everything selected the same as the video and it all looks like its going to work but after i draw the line across the two images to blend them together i get nothing. I notice on the thumbnail for the layer mask that everything is still white but in the video you can clearly see that there is a black to white gradient applied. Not sure why this is and would welcome any help.
