jshell Error: illegal start of statement

I kept seeing this error in jshell when trying to open a class:

Error:

Illegal start of statement } ^

I figured this out: turns out I had an extra closing bracket in my code. Once I got rid of the bracket it worked. A quick google search didn't return any info for me, so I thought I'd post this here in case any one else runs into a similar issue.
