I have some experience with .NET and my understanding is that namespaces are groups of classes. I'm sure that's an over-simplification, but that's how I think of it. Let me know if that's incorrect.
Being new to Java, it seems like on the surface that a package is very similar to a .NET namespace. Is that true?

You're correct, at surface depth, packages and namespaces are very similar; they're both essentially used to control scope, preventing naming conflicts and organizing code. For more information on nuances between the two, I'd recommend checking out this stack overflow article on comparing/contrasting the two.
Hope that helps!
