Is "return isHit;" part necessary in our code? I don't get it

public boolean applyGuess(char letter)
  {
      boolean isHit = answer.indexOf(letter) != -1;
      if(isHit)
      {
          hits += letter;
      } else
      {
          misses += letter;
      }
      return  isHit;
  }

I notice that isHit will be returned as a boolean right? so it will return the same boolean from our condition. I just can't understand what's the point of using return isHit at the ends

In the next video you prompt the user and you use the return value to let the user know if they got a hit or not.
