Android Build an Interactive Story App (Retired) User Input Finding Views by IDs

Initialize the member variable mExterminateButton using the findViewById() method. The ID for the button is button1.

Initialize the member variable mExterminateButton using the findViewById() method. The ID for the button is button1. Also you have to cast the findViewByID() with a generic view. I did the beginner course but it has been about 2 months and I'm exactly refreshed on the topic so could you explain what I did wrong and why your way works.

MainActivity.java
import android.app.Activity;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.view.View;
import android.widget.Button;

public class MainActivity extends Activity {

    protected Button mExterminateButton;

    @Override
    public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
        super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
        setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
        mExterminateButton = (Button) findViewByID(button1);
    }

}

You need to reference the id "button1" using the resources object R, so R.id.button1. There's also a small typo in findViewByID which should be findViewById.
