image width 100% or separate images for different screen sizes?

what do you think folks?

image width 100% or separate images for different screen sizes?

Is the impact on resolution is a question to be pondered or not?

From what I have recently read it is a good idea to have at least two different sized images when shooting for a more responsive layout: one for mobile platforms and one for desktop experiences.

In Mobile First by Luke Wroblewski he discusses this issue and many other that provide a helpful foundation for building from a mobile first perspective.

"Where we still need to do some work, though, is with high-resolution images. Unlike browser-rendered controls, text, and visual elements, image files wonโ€™t automatically adjust to higher pixel density screens. Theyโ€™ll render at the correct size but lack crispness and definition when pixel density is high (fig 7.2). To account for this, youโ€™ll need two sets of images: one large (twice the resolution) and one at standard resolution. You can then tell web browsers (using CSS3 media queries, JavaScript, or a server-side script) to only include the higher resolution graphics on devices with a high-resolution display."

Hopefully this helps!

ps The A Book Apart series is super clean, helpful, and quick to read. Many of them can be found in PDF form if you google search the title and add pdf to the end of your query.

Glad I could help!

I highly recommend reading the A Book Apart series - they are really quite enjoyable and extremely informative. So far I have gone through: Design Is A Job & Designing for Emotion; along with Mobile First.

All three are solid reads and if I recall correctly - some of the books in the series of 13 are referenced here in TreeHouse lessons.

Also I was hoping you would be so kind as to mark my answer as the best answer - I am well on my way to accomplishing the initial phases of the TreeHouse Career Program and I am finding that the forum participation requirement will likely be the most difficult. That being said, I have found that it is always a good practice to upvote community members responses accordingly and indicate those that have the best answers - it seems to be an easy way to help those that may have similar questions later on.

Good luck on your continued progress.
