I would like to be able to receive paiement directly from credit cards. how to do it and How to know if it is secured?

There are several ways to checkout a paiement. Gateway like paypal, cheque paiement, direct bank transfer and there is the credit card way. Treehouse used a really nice one when i tried to register. I need to knw how to do it, how to make it look good and how to make it secured.
