there are a few problems in your code. Firstly you should remove your old method (the first three lines). Besides that you indented your except block incorrectly, you have a typo in your error (it should be ValueError instead of ValueErorr) and you forgot the colon after except ValueError.
If you fix all of that it should look like this and work:
def add(x,y):
try:
x = float(x)
y = float(y)
except ValueError:
return None
else:
return x + y
