It is entirely up to you. On the rare occasion I am using Mysql Php Apace together I use mamp. If I am using a framework I use a VM.

28,149 PointsYou can use MySQL on Mac, I do almost every day. In fact it should be easier to set up because you're not on windows. (Nothing wrong with windows, it's just not as friendly setting up technology stacks).
Check out Xampp or Mamp, either will install MySQL for you. They're free. I personally use MAMP on my Mac computer.
Than you can maintain your mysql databases with phpmyadmin.
