How do I resolve this? I followed the installation steps to the T.

Try this:
at the command line, type mysql-workbench which should launch your mysql client While In the client, click on Server Administration. It may say "could not connect ...." Now, click "continue" which will take you to the Management page where you can start & stop your server.
