I'm not sure I understand your question, but I do see some weirdness with your html: your opening a tags are missing the end >, your img tags don't close, and you are missing closing quotes on your src attributes.

So, it should look something like this:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
  <head>
    <meta charset="utf-8">
    <title>Nick Pettit</title>
  </head>
  <body>
    <header>
      <a href="index.html">
        <h1>Nick Pettit</h1>
        <h2>Designer</h2>
      </a>
      <nav>
        <ul>
          <li><a href="index.html">Portfolio</a></li>
          <li><a href="about.html">About</a></li>
          <li><a href="contact.html">Contact</a></li>
        </ul>
      </nav>
    </header>
    <section>
        <ul>
           <li>
            <a href="" alt="">
              <img src="img/numbers-01.jpg" alt="" />
              <p>Experimentation with color and texture.</p>
            </a>
          </li>
          <li>
            <a href="img/numbers-02.jpg" alt="">
              <img src="img/numbers-01.jpg" alt="" />
              <p>Playing with blending modes in Photoshop.</p>
            </a>
         </li>
          <li>
            <a href="img/numbers-06.jpg" alt="">
              <img src="img/numbers-01.jpg" alt="" />
              <p>Trying to create 80's style of glows.</p>
            </a>
          </li>
       </ul>
