Python Python Basics (2015) Logic in Python Try and Except

I do not understand why my code won't go through.

      a = float(x)

Hi Nick,

this is how it should look like. Note that there are some indentation errors in your code. The try block checks if the passed in arguments x and y can be converted to floats. If that's not possible, None is returned. If it is possible, the result of the addition of the float numbers a and b is returned.

def add(x, y):    
    try:
        a = float(x)
        b = float(y)
    except ValueError:
        return None
    else:
        return a + b
