String answerToLife = "42";
int answer = Integer.parseInt(answerToLife);

Is the correct code, you used parseint() instead of parseInt().

I'm getting an error "java.lang.NumberFormatException: For input string: "answerToLife" ()"

String answerToLife = "42";
int answer = Integer.parseInt("answerToLife");

You're trying to pass in a String that is equal to "answerToLife", you have to remove the quotes around what you used. Right now the compiler is trying to parse "answerToLife" for a number, and it can't find one. Use what I wrote in the previous response, it's the correct way to do this question.
