Java Java Objects (Retired) Harnessing the Power of Objects Throwing Exceptions

I can't seem to throw an exception.

I'm not quite sure if my condition statement is right.

GoKart.java
public class GoKart {
  public static final int MAX_BARS = 8;
  private String mColor;
  private int mBarsCount;

  public GoKart(String color) {
    mColor = color;
    mBarsCount = 0;
  }

  public String getColor() {
    return mColor;
  }

  public void drive() {
    drive();
      if (mBarsCount < 0) {
      throw new IllegalArgumentException("Not enough battery remains");
      }
  }

  public void drive(int laps) {
    // Other driving code omitted for clarity purposes
    mBarsCount -= laps;
  }

  public void charge() {
    while (!isFullyCharged()) {
      mBarsCount++;
    }
  }

  public boolean isBatteryEmpty() {
    return mBarsCount == 0;
  }

  public boolean isFullyCharged() {
    return mBarsCount == MAX_BARS;
  }
}

Hi Mariam,

you have two drive methods here. The difference of them is the method signature of the second drive method. It takes a integer (number of laps).

To avoid a dead battery during a drive you should place the exception inside the drive(int laps) method.

So your code could look like this:

  public void drive() {
    drive(1);
// call the second drive method inside your first drive and drive 1 lap
  }

  public void drive(int laps) {
   if (laps > mBarsCount) {
// to ensure that number of laps are greater then number of battery bars
// check if the number of laps is greater then battery capacity
// and throw an exception if true
      throw new IllegalArgumentException("Not enough battery remains");
      }
     mBarsCount -= laps;
// this line will only be executed if the battery has enough bars
  }

I hope it make sense ... shooot right back if you need more information :)
