I can't see why the return declaration isn't working.

Any help would be appreciated.

  public void addTile(char tile) {

You want the parameter you passed in to be checked against the every element. So the function should look like this:

public void getTileCount(char characLoop){
    int count = 0;
    for(char tile: mHand.toCharArray()){
      if(characLoop == tile){
        count++;
      } 
    } 
    return count;
}
