i "cannot log in to mySQL server"

after not even being able to bring up phpMyAdmin through localhost:8080 ive since changed "config" to "cookie" in my phpmyadmin file and now i can open the phpmyadmin page but when i use "root" for username and typing nothing for the password it gives me two messages "cannot log into mySQL server" and also " Connection for controluser as defined in your configuration failed." of course theres an obstacle to each step in this process
