I think it is because you're surrounding the images with a href tags -- I don't think the code challenge wants you to do that just yet, though I could be wrong. Hope this helps!

this is the part two of the challenge when it asks to add the herf tag. it is strange thought. thanks anyway!

Are you sure? Here are the instructions I receive when I get to part 2 of that code challenge:

"Inside the three new list items, add the following images from inside the img folder: "numbers-01.jpg", "numbers-02.jpg", and "numbers-06.jpg". Leave the alt attributes blank, and don’t add any captions or links. Just the images!"

Are you trying this on a mobile device? I've had trouble with checking my work on the iPad, not sure why.

Also, have you wrapped the "footer" content on "a"s as well? Try copying and pasting this:

<section>
      <ul id="gallery">
        <li><a href="img/numbers-01.jpg"><img src="img/numbers-01.jpg" alt="">
            <p>Experimentation with color and texture.</p></a></li>
        <li><a href="img/numbers-02.jpg"><img src="img/numbers-02.jpg" alt="">
            <p>Playing with blending modes in Photoshop.</p></a></li>
        <li><a href="img/numbers-06.jpg"><img src="img/numbers-06.jpg" alt="">
            <p>Trying to create an 80's style of glows.</p></a></li>
        <li><a href="img/numbers-09.jpg"><img src="img/numbers-09.jpg" alt="">
            <p>Drips created using Photoshop brushes.</p></a></li>
        <li><a href="img/numbers-12.jpg"><img src="img/numbers-12.jpg" alt="">
            <p>Creating shapes using repetition.</p></a></li>
      </ul>
    </section>
    <footer><a href="http://twitter.com/nick" class="social-icon"><img src="img/twitter-wrap.png" alt="twitter logo"></a><a href="http://facebook.com/nick" class="social-icon"><img src="img/facebook-wrap.png" alt="facebook logo"></a>
      <p>&copy; 2015 Nick Petit.</p>
    </footer>

You have few errors in your code. One the challenge is a not asking you to use the href around the img. Secondly,you forgot to close the ul tag. Lastly, your code have to be in the section tag. Something like this

 <section>
       <ul>
         <li><img src="img/numbers-01.jpg" alt=""></li>
         <li><img src="img/numbers-02.jpg" alt=""></li>
         <li><img src="img/numbers-06.jpg" alt=""></li>
      </ul>
    </section>
