I am getting the error that I have not put my code in the onCreate() method but I have. Unsure why this error is occurring.

The type only has to be specified when you first define a variable. This declares a new variable of type Spaceship that's local to onCreate(). Because it has the same name as the member variable mSpaceship, the local variable will take precedence. To set the member leave off the type:
mSpaceship = new Spaceship("FIREFLY");
