How would this be added if not using an FTP or server? Would you just 'add new'?

How does the plugin get into the wp site? Is it ok to just upload the one file or does the folder need to be uploaded or a zip?

Yes, you can just hit "add new" in the backend of WP then at the top of the screen hit "upload" and you can upload the zip file that way.

You can also do it via FTP by unzipping the file then going into the wp_content/plugin folder and just place it in there. Dont forget to you need to activate the plugin after you have it in your plugins folder
