That's kind of liking asking how to design. I know that's not very helpful, so I will tell you this. When I sit down to design a website, which in not very often, I try to put myself in the shoes of the end user. I list off what are the most important features of the site and ask myself "if I was visiting this site as a user, why would I be coming here and what would I want to do?" Theoretically, those things would be most prominent and take center stage, but you have to balance what the end user wants with what you client wants. So often you have to make some compromises. Once you determine what is most important client and most useful to the user try to put it towards the top center of the page.

That question really depends on you.

I browse for inspiration. Dribble has a lot of great websites ideas that use various styles! Look at websites you like and find what you like and what you don't like. Use that as a place to jump off from. I really like the big images other people don't.

What kind of site you're designing will play a big role too. If you are designing for someone else see what websites they like and go from there.

Yes browsing for inspiration is alway is important.

+1

put "what is most important and useful to the client/user" towards the top center of the page >> sth new I learn, thks

one of the reason I ask this because there are so many possibilities of using Grid out there that I don't know where to start and where it should end, mean when the layout I am currently put in is good enough and I don't need to keep experimenting anymore, kind of like I need some kind of relative standard, some kind of "instinct" for this so I have an idea what I should do with the grid to have both an approriate but also creative and good-quality design

That instinct you're talking about is something you learn, but until then focus on the goal of the site and ask questions. Ask your client/self whether or not they/you like minimalistic design or flat UI. Ask the questions, and then write down the answers. Then before the project make a plan, in writing, that turns those answers into actionable/measurable goals. Once you working on the project, stop periodically and go over your goals. Determine whether or not you are meeting your goals, and make adjustments. Most importantly, for beginners in my opinion, is to give yourself plenty on time with the project. That way when you finish the project, you have time before its suppose to be given to the client to set it aside for a few day and then come back and look at it with fresh eyes.

Thanks for your detailed opinions
