How to use .format()

As you can see, I have problems with it

banana.py 
available = "banana split;hot fudge;cherry;malted;black and white"
sundaes = available.split(";")
menu = "Our available flavors are: {}."

in the video you see him put a string with a "hole" {} in it, then he calls format on the string with the value that goes in the hole as the argument to format. so "this {} my string".format('is') for example.
