21,457 PointsYes. I started really working at learning to code about eight months ago because I oversee several Wordpress sites and I haven't found a more comprehensive and user friendly way to learn the CMS. Wordpress is built on PHP so knowing PHP does not hurt if you are looking for get deeper into developing functionality. Jacob is right, too; write code as much as you can. To really work with Wordpress, it will behoove you to have a decent handle on html, php, css, js, and jqeury as well as a working familiarity with resources like the codex and hierarchy.
Good Luck!
