How to advance as a programmer?

Hey guys! Ive been on Treehouse for quite a while now and ive gotten pretty far from where i started. I know Treehouse is primarily oriented towards web tech, but im much more interested in application software.

With the stuff ive learned in terms of that i feel pretty comfortable building a clone of a given website (only the front end ofcourse).

That being said, i feel like im still totally lost on anything but a simple console application. My dream is to build a simple 2d game, but im completely lost on how to even get started on that (I have finished the JavaFX course, but that didnt really go further than showing us how to build a website like thing, in a window).

Ive looked around everywere for tutorials on how to make a 2d game engine, but on top of me just not understanding alot of it, the production quality is terrible on those youtube videos, and they dont really explain what theyre doing. (The ones ive found that is).

All of that being said, can anyone who has gotten beyond this step give me some advice, and possibly some pointers (websites, videos etc.)

Thanks so much in advance!

The entire Game Development course series is about building desktop games with the Unity engine. The example games are 3D, but I believe Unity also supports 2D graphics.

There's also a Beginner Game Development with Unity track.

Thanks for your response Steven! Although as mentioned I'm actually interested in building it from scratch. Including a simple engine.
