When I look at portfolios made by others it seems simple and minimal is trending. They typically rely on gradients to add styling. Think bootstrap.
When I research professional devs they tend to go more artsy and creative. Something like you’d see on Awwards.
Obviously one takes more time than the other - but what are employers wanting to see? A simple site to throw stuff on, or a curated artsy one?

4,881 PointsThat's a great question. To be honest, I was really confused by the same train of thought when I was creating my portfolio. Remember content is king. When I was a hiring manager, I did not care about what project a potential employee worked on, I was more concerned about the work he/she did on that project. Make sure you showcase the project, what you did on it and a link to the project and/or it's Github page if possible.
The next thing I looked for was how well their website was put together. It does not have to be an Awwards site but it should be responsive, clean and easy to navigate. You can always improve your design over time or purchase a template that will help you get your site up pretty fast and accomplish the same goal. It's totally up to you. Good luck!
