How often to learn

Hi,

I’m wondering if anyone else is in the same box as me, where I work full time but I do want a career change. An I’m wondering how many times a day does someone do the courses or practice code ?

With me I’m morivated one day and then the next I’m procrastinating and putting it off, this is either due to the fact that the one lesson didn’t stick so I keep repeating etc.

Regards,

James

I am sort of in the same boat, but I do try to do 2 hours every day or every other day. It's not easy and I think if you don't feel up to it, it's very hard to learn because your mind keeps wandering off. Must say though that even if I don't sit down for four days straight, my inner voice usually nags me, so I do end up learning eventually. It will be cliche, but every little bit helps - it's a progress albeit slow. And if you have only done like 20 mins. it's still a reason to be proud, because you have spent 20 minutes to try and build a better future for yourself and not wasted them on something meaningles (but nice) like watching tv or playing games etc. That's just me though and for every one of us there is different motivation. (I'll confess - I did stop for 10 - 11 months, when I was struggling with first project, but I'm glad I've come back to it, because the teacher has improved the course since and it's a bit clearer now (I think all teachers do that).

I think my motivation is I want to be a developer now, I have a degree in web development but deparession kicked me in the arse 6 years ago an zapped it out of me.

But trying to juggle work and learning is hard so I do at least an hour a day on my break.

Then you are doing better than me(I didn't do anything for four days straight as I said)! You'll get there! I do it before the bed (because no way you are getting me up at the crack of dawn for anything short of life or death situations) and for some weird reason my brain works better at the end of my long working days (I work 7 days a week). As I said you know, how and when your brain works better. Every little bit is step closer to finish (or every video in this case).

Odd as it sounds i work better in the nighttime as my brain is in the concentration state.

But I am getting there slowly, I do love making things happen in a web browser, but trying to become a backend developer before going into JavaScript, as my css and html knowledge are there at the moment.

Wow, brilliant! I'm envious as I don't have any previous knowledge of computing and programming, so I don't even have a clue 98% of the time, what people are discussing. You are doing great! Just don't give up!

Thanks for this, and yeah just need to stop being a lazy person, this has always been my life style. But I guess don't need motivation just need to sit down and put the work in. I will read this imposter syndrome. What did you think of it ?

regards, James

To be honest, I think that we all suffer from it more or less. It's definitely a real thing and it did sound like something similar that you are going through. The Craig Deniss link was good, I could relate to it. Good luck, James!

Best regards, Anna
