How long does it take to learn how to build an app?

One of my final university modules involves me doing a project. They've been very loose in regards to what I can or can't do, so I'm pondering if an app would be feasible.

However, I'm not familiar with app development languages. I do have a MacBook and PC, so could learn Swift (I've also done some Java, though I do hate it with a passion), but what are people's experiences with app construction? Is it easy enough to learn well enough in 6 months or so to build something useful?

I do have some fitness apps, which I'm thinking of doing something similar (keep track of results on a date by date basis, able to export results) etc.
