How do I get a char from string for this question to compare if its greater than or less than a said mark ?

What is the code i need to complete this code challenge could be that I am up so late that my brain is not working properly

ConferenceRegistrationAssistant.java 
public class ConferenceRegistrationAssistant {

  public int getLineFor(String lastName) {
    /* If the last name is between A thru M send them to line 1
       Otherwise send them to line 2 */

what I found was to do this

public class ConferenceRegistrationAssistant { public int getLineFor(String lastName) { /* If the last name is between A thru M send them to line 1 Otherwise send them to line 2 */

int line = 0;
char ch = lastName.charAt(0);  // 1

if(ch <= 'M') {              // 2
  line = 1;
} else { 
  line = 2;
}
return line;

}
