How can a Business Analyst be doing User Experience role?

If a Business Analyst (BA) is planning to get a UX Certification / training..

  1. How can a Business Analyst help with the User Experience?
  2. What benefits can the BA bring to a BA team with this certification?
  3. The company thinks that most of the time the Marketing or the Developer does the UX, how can the BA fit this step?
  4. How can the BA convince thier leadership for this certification?

1 Answer

  1. Business Analysis is a part of the UX design process. Whether research is performed by other roles or a dedicated role (which is ideal).
  2. Anyone with this certification would ideally have a better understanding of all the parts which come together for a good solution. This could play out in clearer team roles. It would most beneficially provide an analysis that is comprehensive for the needs of the project with consideration to the users and customers. Thus, reducing project costs and risk.
  3. Marketing and Developers can't do their job without business strategy. A business analyst can help keep things aligned. In my opinion, all roles contribute to UX.
  4. I highly recommend bringing some research to light. The book UX Strategy by Jaime Levy highlights 4 facets to UX Design, which includes Business Strategy, Value Innovation, Validated User Research, and Killer UX. Here is a sample chapter from the book. http://www.uxmatters.com/mt/archives/2015/12/ux-strategy-how-to-devise-innovative-digital-products-that-people-want.php

Great information. Thank you very much.
