How about when word crashes, and you can recover a file when you start it again, why does this happen? RAM or Hard drive

When you are working in a file and word crashes, you can't save the file, but sometimes when you open word again you can recover the previous file. Why does this happen? It stores the information in the RAM or in the hard drive?

Most modern versions of Word make intermediate saves while you are working on a file to your hard drive. It happens in the background without you seeing. I believe the default is set to save every 10 minutes. This can be adjusted to your liking. In Word 2016 this can be accessed through Word Options -> Save. It will even allow you to change the place on your hard drive where these backups are kept.
