I am planning to build my portfolio shortly and would like to have an idea how a successful and impressive front-end portfolio looks like. How to build a portfolio that impress the employer.

Definitely annotate any examples of your projects you can provide. Talk about what your goals were when making the project, how you succeeded, what you might perhaps do differently next time, what you learned in the process, etc.
