Design Typography for Designers Introduction to Typography Typography Terminology

high x heigth

I am embarrassed to ask this question, but do not understand the explanation that she gives about highxheight.

1 Answer

Hi Ubo!

High x heigh just means that the top of the lowercase letters in a word are closer to the top of any potential uppercase letter.

Low x height just means that the top of the lowercase letters in a word are further from the top of any potential uppercase letter.

Examples:

In high x height, an e might be 2/3 as tall as an E.

In low x height, an e would be more like 1/2 as tall as E.

In other words, the difference in heights between lowercase and uppercase characters is greater in low x height fonts than in high x height fonts.

Does that make sense?

I hope that helps.

Stay safe and happy coding!
