Hi all, do the learning tracks at Treehouse come in an recommended order?

I am new to learning code, and treehouse. I know the content of Tracks comes in an order, but do the tracks themelves come in order? i.e would it be better to take the Java course before the front end HTML/CSS course as it is presented in my list or will it not matter what order I work in?

Hi Stacey,

Welcome to Treehouse.

Tracks are generally meant to be self contained and you would choose one based on your current interest level. There are some exceptions to this though. If you look through all the track names you'll see that there is both a beginner and an intermediate android track.

So if you were interested in android development then you would want to do the beginner one first.

If you can state your interest level then we could probably give you some guidance on where to get started.

Thank you Jason - I am just finishing of the Digital Literacy track because I thought it would be good to start at the very beginning. I can see a Java course next but would like to look at the front development track before that. I haven't coded before so I am defiantly at the beginner level.

I'm not sure if Introduction to HTML and CSS is in the front end track but you might want to consider taking that one before starting the front end track. It might prepare you a little better for it.

If you are completly new to programming, you might find it more comfortable/easier to start with HTML and CSS as those languages are MUCH easier to learn than a language like Java. However, this would only apply if you intend to include front-end web development (i.e. the "stuff" you see in a web page) in your studies as that is all you can do with HTML/CSS.

My thoughts as well Ted - I already have seen a bit of HTML and CSS so I would like to start there. Saw the Java track in the list before the HTML and CSS front end and wondered if that meant anything. Thanks for helping me out.

I took the Digital Literacy Track recently and it was a great knowledge refresher. I agree with Ted that the HTML/CSS course is a good next step. I am taking Beginner JavaScript right now and I feel very challenged and yet that it is the proper next step from HTML and CSS (I'm sure I'll be taking front end at some point as well).

The SQL class is very well taught, the concepts are not intimidating, and you can get through all 4 courses in a relatively short period of time should you be looking to add something else to your skill set!
