13,188 PointsI think the "gim" is a misspelling and he meant 'gif' instead (or at least I am assuming).
As for the question, it all really depends on the project, and what you are looking to accomplish. They all have their uses.

PNGs have no compression (bigger file size for instance) but they have alpha layer meaning the can have transparent pixels.
JPGs can be compressed (to minimize file size) but has no alpha layer.
I do not know GIM.
