I've been working on a project for a while using just the master branch. I would like to start using a development branch so that master acts as the production branch.
Are there any potential issues with creating a development branch off of a master branch that has been in use as the only branch for a good amount of time (i.e, it's been in use for over a year so there are a bunch of commits on it).

11,368 PointsNone come to mind. When you make a new branch, it will be a copy of the branch you are branching off of. You never have to merge that branch, you can always go back and make a new branch if the one you are working on isn't working out for you. The only problem I have ever had with branches is the occasional merge conflict that has to be manually handled. And that is usually not too bad to deal with.
