My two cents is just to justify your price. A breakdown of services and cost-per-service will be clear to your client how much they are paying and what the yield is on their money. (If people don’t want to pay, perhaps the relationship is not worth the dollar amount.) As Greg mentioned, consider what work you want in your portfolio as well. Not all the best paychecks are the most fun work and sometimes the most fun work is not the best paying.
Cost is subjective and difficult to manage. It’s not something that can be figured out over night. Keep experimenting with your price, communication, and process and I’m sure you’ll see trends in your favor.

31,522 PointsI think the issue with some of the freelance sites is that because they're open worldwide to developers, it means that you could be undercut by someone who lives in the likes of India, where $10 is a very good wage for them. I've actually read in a few business books (such as 4-hour work week by Tim Ferriss), that recommend outsourcing work to foreign countries. Simply put, you're paying far less than someone local.
It might be worth looking at Odesk though. Even if the pay isn't great, it's practical experience and something you can put on a portfolio.
