There are many free options for hosting and different ways to get your site online - Is this just to show that I have done the work or do I have to actually pay for a site? Can I just use git-hub pages or a free hosting service like hostinger to do this?

13,023 PointsFree hosting is great! I love using it for personal projects and sites in development. However most have some kind of catch or they simply don't look as professional.
I would use free hosting to: Make a rough copy of a website Test out a new feature Develop a website for a client (only during the development process NOT depolyment) If I had no budget (aka helping a non profit)
I would NOT use free hosting to: Display a portfolio site of my work to companies Host a clients finished website
