Failed to build gem native extension.

while installing rails ( gem install rails ) this error shows up:

Building native extensions. This could take a while...

Are you on a Windows machine? If you are, you should consider trying Cloud9 IDE instead. The URL is c9.io, and you can set up a rails environment very quickly. Windows has a lot of weird quirks when it comes to ruby and rails, so I'm not quite sure why you are getting an error.
