Python Python Basics (2015) Number Game App Squared

Exceptions?

I am trying to complete the "Squared" section that includes exceptions. I have entered the code as listed: def squared(num): try: return(num ** 2) except ValueError: return(num * len(num))

This does not seem to work. Any suggestions?

squared.py
# EXAMPLES
# squared(5) would return 25
# squared("2") would return 4
# squared("tim") would return "timtimtim"
def squared(num):
    ans = int(num)
    try:
        return(ans ** 2)
    except ValueError:
        return(ans * len(ans))

You're pretty close! You want to catch an exception if the int() method fails due to being passed a string instead of a number, so the ans = int(num) bit needs to be inside the try block.
