Emulator problem

Hello there, It keeps saying Device Android442 [emulator-5554] is online, waiting for processes to start up.. but emulator stays black and with the android icon in the middle

The native android emulator is painfully slow. It needs some tweaking for it to run at acceptable speeds. I suggest you to use Genymotion. It is much faster and has good features. There is a tutorial on teamtreehouse Android Track if you want one. I'd suggest you to just go download and figure it out yourself. It is easy as a breeze.
