Ecommerce Store Customer Log-in Before Viewing Products

I am building an ecommerce page in to an existing site using Adobe Business Catalyst, and the client wants to have customers log-in before they can view/purchase from the site. They want to be able to email capture and filter for emails with .mil suffixes so they can discount/track products. The only similar example I can reference is when Apple or Adobe discount for .edu, and it is made known by having a feature spotlight on the site and the discount applied during checkout. Any advice or pearls of wisdom?

This sounds like a terrible user experience.

A better user journey is to let anyone view the products and apply the discount when/if the a user signs up. You can also mention prominently the discount available to active duty military members.

I agree. I will try to educate the client.
