Downloading Videos on Treehouse

Treehouse is a great platform to learn how to code. The idea behind Treehouse is amazing (Way to go Ryan and Alan!). Sometimes the need may arise to download the amazing videos and watch it on the go, now considering since the Treehouse mobile app has been KILLED! To be able to download Treehouse videos, one must need a Pro subscription ($49 a month) and the only platform available is through iTunes. The downside of iTunes is that, though there is a 3-month free trial, it starts at around $11 a month. If we are paying for a Pro subscription, why must we pay additional for an iTunes subscription? Another downside is that you cannot download an entire course at a time using iTunes. You can do so one video at a time, which is a rather time-consuming process.

One solution could be to download all course material (code files etc) including the videos as part of a Zip file. The logic in this case: Include the videos, other relevant course material of a particular course in a Zip file available to download without using iTunes.

Hi Jason Dsouza,

If you're on a Pro subscription plan you can download the mp4 video files in both low and high definition from within the 'Downloads' tab of each lesson. There is no absolute need for an iTunes account.

Happy coding :dizzy:

I have just upgraded but cannot download the videos :/ The video section just keeps telling me to upgrade. I have a really low data plan on my phone and hope I can take the videos with me on my tablet offline while I´m commuting.

Hi Jason,

I'm not sure I'm understanding. iTunes does not charge for pod casts (or any type of account), it never has. The only Apple service that offers an "Free Trial" and then charges is the streaming Apple Music, so I'm not sure what you are referring to about this Free Trial and then $11 a month? Maybe you're confusing iTunes and Pod Cast feeds (which is what Treehouse uses) with the Apple Streaming Music service?

Also, you can download the entire course with iTunes. You just need to open the "feed" tab and then download all the videos. These will be downloaded to you Pod cast library on your local computer for future viewing.

Dave is correct, though. None of this can be done on a Basic Plan. You will need to upgrade to the Pro Plan.

I see you are getting a bit confused. That's fine, because my explanation was a bit off! I have a Windows machine and when i went to download course videos, i was required to download iTunes. I clicked the link that directed me to Apple's official iTunes homepage. I downloaded iTunes onto my machine. Next, when i tried to download my videos, it redirected me to the iTunes application and started downloading the first video only(only after i clicked on free trial and inputted my billing info). From my experience, one video can be downloaded at once. You have to attempt to download 3 videos manually if there are 3 videos for that course

My suggestion:

" Download all course material (code files etc) including the videos as part of a Zip file. The logic in this case: Include the videos, other relevant course material of a particular course in a Zip file available to download without using iTunes. "

Hi Jason Dsouza,

HD downloads (.mp4) no iTunes required

You might just want to re-read the responses. You don't need iTunes regardless of whether you're on a Windows or Mac. Downloading is possible without iTunes; again, you're required to be on a Pro subscription to have the option, then you can just select the Download tab on each mondule and download either SD or HD quality .mp4s

iTunes bulk downloading experience

I thought I'd install iTunes and test out Jason Anders advice as perhaps it had changed over time and maybe his advice was out of date. Nope, all working without issue. Once iTunes was installed and using the iTunes link available for each track here, I was able to set iTunes to download all 'episodes' of a track for offline viewing, I also set it to not delete once viewed so I could retain them for future reference.

Other thoughts

Obviously there are some issues here to overcome, but I can't really offer any help sorry as I've been able to download both with and without iTunes without any problems (iTunes accomplished simply by following the advice above).

While iTunes enabled me to download ALL videos for each track (I agree it would be nice if it also downloaded the project files in a zip too) which was a nice change from manually downloading each file under the downloads tabs, I'll be sticking to downloading from the 'Downloads' tab on each lesson screen simply because the iTunes didn't offer a HD version to download (well not that I could see ... as you can probably guess by the fact I needed to install it :P I'm not really iTunes savvy).

Considering the extremely low price points they've managed to maintain, I'm amazed we get as much as we do.

I hope you get it all sorted.
Perhaps a reinstall of iTunes?? maybe there's a corruption in a config file or something?? Perhaps contact Apple support (I'm told they are very good)

Best of luck, :dizzy:

Dave

OK, now i'm a bit confused!

When i had a pro account, i didnt have iTunes installed. When i went to the download button at the bottom-right of a course, i was directed to Apple iTunes webpage where i could install iTunes (https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/). once that was downloaded, i clicked the download button (on treehouse) and that brought me to the iTunes application on my machine. I saw a download start, but the first video was the only one that downloaded.

I am not able to locate the "feeds" tab on iTunes.

Is there a video which shows how to properly download a course on Treehouse? That would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Jason

After selecting the "iTunes Feed" option (right-hand side of a course overview page via our website) iTunes should launch and queue up the course as a whole for you to download.

You need to navigate to your Podcast section of iTunes to see this queued course. Once there you should have a view that looks like this: https://i.imgur.com/yFRWhzm.png

Make sure you select the "Feed" option as Unplayed will only show a single video, and then download the individual videos within the course.

I hope this clears up the confusion!

Thanks, Rob!

It's cleared some of my confusion! One last thing, i dont think i am able to view the downloaded videos on iTunes! Where are the videos that were downloaded in File Explorer? Or do i have to individually download them onto my computer??

It appears that you're still on your free trial period. Downloading of videos will be available once you're on a paid Pro subscription.
