do you have to buy the adobe photoshop

Hey Ayush, one option would be to do the free 30-day trial of Photoshop. The drawback would be that after the 30 days, you wouldn't be able to open and edit your files without buying Photoshop or using a friend's copy. But you could at least finish this course, and maybe play around with it and see if you think it's worth the subscription price. I think it's currently $20/month.

Another option is this: http://www.gimp.org In my opinion nothing compares to the actual Photoshop. But I know people who are big fans of GIMP, and it's free. F-R-E-E free. From a quick watch of the linked video you should be able to use GIMP for all of those tasks, you might just have to spend some time finding workarounds.

If you plan to be a professional designer it is best to subscribe to the Adobe Creative Cloud and learn the 3 biggies — Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. It is a skillset I feel every designer should know or be familiar with.

You could subscribe to just Photoshop for $20 a month if you only will need the one app.

A popular alternative to Photoshop is Sketch — but it is really a Vector UI tool and not meant to edit photos or bitmaps. It is more like an alternative to Illustrator.

Then there is the Affinity Designer series of apps. https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/

They make alternates for Photoshop and Illustrator. These two apps are much cheaper than Adobe's but I havent personally used them so cant vouch for their performance. There have been great reviews around them so maybe worth checking out.
